Coteaux Sud d’Épernay – Extra Brut
The 2014 vintage of José Michel’s Special Club is a classic expression of this traditional house’s understated style, where terroir and long ageing meet careful vinification. Made from 60% Chardonnay and 40% Meunier, all sourced from old vines in and around Moussy, this cuvée represents the pinnacle of the estate’s production and is only released in vintages deemed exceptional.
Vinification took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with all base wines resting on fine lees before tirage. The estate chooses not to encourage malolactic fermentation, a rare practice in Champagne, which retains the wine’s original acidity and allows for a more linear and ageworthy structure. This stylistic choice is key to José Michel’s identity, giving the wine a sharper edge and a more detailed aromatic profile.
After bottling in the spring of 2015, the wine underwent a long secondary fermentation and aged sur lattes for approximately 8 years, building fine autolytic complexity. The 2014 was disgorged with a low dosage (typically 3–4.5 g/L), giving the wine the Extra Brut classification and allowing the saline minerality and firm backbone to shine clearly through.
