The 2018 vintage in Aÿ was one of the most remarkable in recent Champagne history. After a wet winter and a challenging spring with significant mildew pressure, the season transformed from mid-June onwards into a long period of warm, dry, and sunny weather. The vines flourished under near-perfect conditions, producing healthy grapes of exceptional quality. For Aÿ, one of Champagne's most celebrated Grand Cru villages and renowned for its outstanding Pinot Noir, the vintage delivered beautifully ripe fruit while preserving freshness and balance. The result is a harvest defined by generosity, precision, and remarkable ageing potential.
H. Goutorbe Special Club 2018 is a superb expression of this outstanding vintage. Elegant and distinguished, it combines the richness of the year with the precision and finesse that define the house style. The bouquet opens with aromas of ripe orchard fruits, citrus, white flowers, and subtle brioche, gradually revealing greater complexity as the wine evolves in the glass. On the palate, it is beautifully textured, offering lively acidity wrapped in a creamy, silky mouthfeel that leads to a long, mineral-driven finish.
Crafted from 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, this Special Club cuvée perfectly reflects the character of Aÿ. While already wonderfully expressive and enjoyable today, its structure, freshness, and depth promise even greater complexity with further cellaring, making it a champagne that rewards both immediate pleasure and patient ageing.
Special Club Champagne, also known as the Club de Trésors or Club of Treasures, represents the best classification for grower Champagnes. This club was established back in 1971 as the Club de Viticulteurs Champenois with the purpose of evaluating and recognizing exceptional quality among specific Champagne growers. The small producers worked together to produce a specially made glass bottle for their best vintages. And they only choose their best vintages to be put in Special Club bottles.
